How Reversing Negative Thoughts Can Increase Your Productivity

Negative thoughts, or core beliefs, hold us back.

 

  Sometimes, they even set us up for failure before we even begin. We are raised being told by our parents that we are what we eat.  Such is the same with our thoughts.  We are what we think.

 

Think of the top five most common negative core beliefs you hold toward your business.  Chances are, these are thoughts that you have repeatedly.  They play over and over in your head like a tape recorder on automatic rewind. 

 

It is paramount that we change these thoughts into something positive in order to succeed.  These negative thoughts are the ones that crop up every single time we have a business idea. 

 

Because of the negative emotions that are attached to them, it makes it nearly impossible to go into any project relating to our business and be successful.

 

PUT IT IN REVERSE!

 

In an effort to remain productive, we dive into our work and make it a habit not to be stationary.  As long as we are working, success has to come eventually right?  Wrong! 

 

When it comes to negative thoughts…you have to stop when they crop up and put it in reverse for a minute. 

 

In other words, take those icky thoughts, and the feelings attached to them and turn them into good thoughts.negative thoughts, mental skills, positive thinking, negative core beliefs

 

I’m sure you’re thinking that everyone says to think positive but what does this actually mean?

 

  In this case, you’re going to take your top five negative core beliefs that you have about your business and reverse them.

 

1.  I’m not going to try that until I know it works.

 

How does the above statement make you feel?  Is it motivating?  Encouraging?

 

  When I say this statement, I immediately feel stubborn, trapped…in a state of waiting.  None of these feelings that are attached to this statement are conducive to any business. 

 

Yet this statement plays over and over in my head.  How can I make this statement motivating?

 

New Belief:  I’m willing to try it as long as it’s not too risky and I know it’s worked for others like me.

 

Now say this statement.  How do these words make you feel as opposed to the first statement?  Do they prompt feelings of stubbornness, waiting or being trapped?  Absolutely not.

 

With this new statement what doors could possibly be opened?

 

  You may come across some really good times that your followers on Twitter are active.  Instead of dismissing it, perhaps you’ll measure the risk, see that it’s helped others like you and try it.

 

2.  I’m the owner/CEO, I have to be aggressive.

 

Negative thoughts:  entrapment, aggression, closed-mindedness, lack of joy or encouragement

 

New Belief:  I’m the owner/CEO.  I have to stay alert and promote leadership and teamwork.

 

New Feeling: Control, respect, knowledge, assertion, motivation, encouragement

 

3.  Work is so hard/stressful.

 

Negative thoughts:  Work will always stress me out because it’s always hard;  Work is boring and no fun;  I don’t like or enjoy work.

 

New Belief:  Work is challenging and no day is ever the same.

 

New Feeling:  Work provides intrinsic value, is never boring and motivates me to succeed.

 

4.  I’m not a ‘techy’ person.

 

Negative Thoughts:  I’ll always fail at tech issues; I won’t succeed because I’m not tech minded.

 

New Belief:  Dealing with tech issues always force me to learn something new.

 

New Feeling:  I can learn and grow from tech issues;  I can conquer problems in my business.

 

5.  Yeah, but change is scary.

 

Negative Thoughts:  Change is bad;  Resist change because it’s scary.

 

New Belief:  Change may be uncomfortable, but it symbolizes growth and success.

 

New Feeling:  Acceptance and anticipation for change; excitement; confidence

 

It is absolutely amazing how one tiny shift in thoughts can alter your emotion. 

 

This is a powerful tool that anyone can learn to use.  The more you practice, the more powerful it becomes.  Invest in yourself, and take a few minutes to reverse your negative thoughts today.

    This just shows how powerful our brains really are . . . can you imagine how amazing we can all be once we tap into that resource more fully???

      Yes that’s the whole idea. Exercising that ‘mind over matter’ concept. The brain is absolutely intriguing and it is a fact that we don’t even use half of ours. Practice makes perfect and this is the first and most powerful ‘productivity hack’ that I’ve learned. I’ll spend a lifetime mastering it though! lol : )

    Great post! I mentioned negative thinking in my other comment, but it works great here! For number three, “Work is hard/stressful,” it’s more like “Work is boring and blah,” for me. Not sure why. I spoke with Valerie on this before. I just get bored of whatever I’m doing and find something else. I may have ADHD. Weird right?

      Yes, you quite possibly could have ADHD…I believe I do also, but have never been diagnosed as such. What I do know is that the more I change those negative core values, the more focused and productive I become. Self-discipline starts with the mind. You have to keep your mind and your heart in alignment in order to feed your passion. Keep reversing negative thoughts and you’ll become more productive. This means don’t tell yourself you’re ADHD…WHO CARES…it’s not going to stop you from being great…so stop making it a negative thing. Make it a positive thing…”I have ADHD so I have more energy than a lot of people.” “I have ADHD so I can switch from one subject to another quickly.” Never never never allow what society terms as a disability stop you from being great! : )

      You’re already half-way there to reversing your negativity on change…because you’ve identified it.     Reversing thoughts and emotion can be quite challenging for me especially when I see something different from I want to see. But, I’m getting there. 😉 Not easy, but totally doable.

    This is super important. With me this comes up when brainstorming. My wife noticed this when we’re brainstorming together. With every idea that comes up, I immediately come up with a reason that it won’t work. I guess my negative belief is new ideas won’t work. I have to change that to everything’s possible. There’s a saying that I’ve lived by since I was a kid. I have no idea where it came from…it’s just always been there as long as I can remember:

      “If your heart isn’t in something, you simply can’t do it.”

      There’s such power in these words. Your brain and your heart have to be aligned…and the way to do that, is to reverse those negative core beliefs. The hardest part is identifying them…but you already did that. So keep telling yourself that new ideas and change are awesome…exciting…etc. You’re well on your way!

    I took on a challenge that Chris Brogan put out not to have any negative thoughts for two weeks – I think I failed about 20 minutes after I accepted it 🙂 I’ve recently identified a rogue mindset issue that has crept in that I’ve been dealing with, and the content in this post will help me even more.       To be honest, I fight negative thoughts almost every single day. BUT…a few months ago, it was all day long. The more I’ve really focused on rewording my thoughts, the less those negative nasty ones come. If I’d done the two week challenge of Chris’s, I would’ve failed 20 minutes into it too…but the awesome part is that the more you practice reversing them, the more empowered you become.     Great reminder Lynn! My biggest problem is forgetting the simplest ideas that have had a big impact on my life, I don’t want to forget, but I do. It’s so easy for old habits of thought to hijack my brain, so thanks again for this amazing reminder that I can refocus on the positive. I’m actually in the process up putting up a big white board in my office and I’m going to write these on a portion of it.
