5 Negative Core Beliefs That Sabotage Your Business

Core Beliefs heavily influence our work performance. 

Why in the world would any entrepreneur intentionally want to sabotagecore beliefs their business?  That’s the thing…they don’t…yet it still happens and sometimes, it’s so ingrained that we don’t even realize it. 

This site is focused on neuro-programming skills.  In order to strengthen them, you must identify and reverse negative thoughts, especially those pertaining to work.


1)  I’m not going to try that until I have proof that it works.

2)  I’m the owner/CEO – I have to be aggressive.

3)  Work is so hard/stressful

4)  I’m not a ‘techy’ person.

5)  Yeah, but change is scary.

What the heck are core beliefs? They’re based upon past experiences and influence how we think, feel and respond to current situations.

Take the Good With the Bad

Let’s cut the psychobabble here.  These thoughts, in a nutshell are  established through our past experiences. We measure everything based on what we’ve already experienced in life.  After particular experiences, we place labels on them. What we don’t consider, however, is that we can absolutely reverse these beliefs and program ourselves to be a raging success

So before you dismiss this and move on…YES, IT’S EASY

Childhood Example:

 As children, we learn that if we ride a bike too fast, we fall off.  Some of us mentally program ourselves not to ride so fast and end up having a great experience with bike riding.  Others, however, focus on the trauma of crashing, scraping limbs and being bruised, so we label the experience as dangerous, boring, or only for little kids.

Adulthood Example:

As internet entrepreneurs (yes, YOU are an entrepreneur!) we tweet a link several times for 3-5 days.  Nothing happens.  So we move on to Facebook and try it there.  The response remains miniscule.  Many of us conclude that internet marketing bites, is a waste of time and we aren’t any good at it.  Then, there are a few that look at it and say, ‘What can I learn from this?’

So each experience has either a positive or a negative label attached to it…and yes, some have both. As we move on from these experiences, how we’ve labeled them dictates how we think, feel and respond to future experiences. If we walk away from an experience and only focus on the negative aspects it brought, we only have ‘negative’ memories. 

So as we experience new things, we drag this negative into our current situation. Is this resonating with you?  It certainly does with me.  We do it and we have not a clue that it’s detrimental.  It’s human instinct…for some, more than others.

So let’s go back to the aforementioned negative core beliefs:

1)  I’m not going to try that until I have proof that it works.

2)  I’m the owner/CEO – I have to be aggressive.

3)  Work is so hard/stressful.

4)  I’m not a ‘techy’ person.

5)  Yeah, but change is scary.

What is the common thread within the aforementioned statements?  Each one is not only an excuse to fail, but it’s a self-imposed obstacle.  We want to be successful, right?  So why do we place limitations on our work?  Because we don’t know any better.

Find Your Personal Core (Limiting) Beliefs

It’s easier than you think.  When you have a negative thought that comes up regarding your work, ask yourself this ONE question:

Do your feelings intensify, or vary depending upon your mood?  If the answer to this is a resounding yes, or even a sometimes…then it is a negative (perhaps even false) core belief.  This is the fastest, easiest way to find the core beliefs that sabotage you in the business realm.

Is This Thinking Logical?

Often, our thought processes are not logical.  Quite frankly, they can be silly.  So ask yourself these questions:

  • If that’s true, what does it really mean
  • Why is that bad?
  • What does that say about me?

Now, pick someone you admire or strive to be like and ask:

Would _______________ think this?

Actionable Step


Okay, so here is what you can do right now.

1)  Think of 5 negative statements about you and your business that run in your mind like a repeating tape recording.  They may be similar to the five mentioned here, or they may be completely different.  Just go through the process here and identify them.

2)  Write them down.

3)  Ask yourself the questions regarding all five of them.

In the next post, we are actually going to take our negative beliefs and make them positive…productive…successful.  Don’t worry, most of the actionable steps that are suggested are steps that don’t take any extra time at all. 

They’re all neuro-programming skills that you can apply DURING your regular work day.  But first, you  have to build a foundation.  In doing so, you need to know exactly what core beliefs are and REVERSE the negative connotations they carry.
